Traditional knowledge is still drawn upon and being retrieved, while restoration science provides a solid foundation for conservation efforts. The restoration and programs teams work closely together to facilitate interactions and relationships that do no harm and are consistent with our goal to extend the health and survival of dryland forests.
Job Summary: Seeking a caring, reliable, and highly motivated full-time person to assist in the restoration and maintenance of lowland dry forest at Kaʻūpūlehu. Restoration projects include native plant restoration and care, continuing infrastructure maintenance, monitoring and data collection, and assistance with learning groups on and off site.
This is a full-time employee position with benefits.
Salary range for this position, is expected to be $47,000 to $52,000 depending on experience, qualifications, and successful completion of probationary period.
Roles and Responsibilities
· Work under the supervision of the Integrated Restoration and Site Infrastructure Co-Director for help with all site activities including site stewardship, site visitors, education, cultural protocols, community outreach, and science/research.
· Required to communicate with both Integrated Restoration and Integrated Programs Co-Directors and to adhere to all management strategies as described within the 10-Year Management Plan.
· Restoration activities include weed and predator management, fire hazard monitoring, plant propagation and care, irrigation system installation and maintenance according to the work plan.
· Assist in the maintenance of the on-site nursery, complying with nursery guidelines and protocols set in the 10-Year Management Plan.
· Maintenance activities including fence, road, building, water system, and ATV maintenance.
· Assist with learning groups, visiting researchers or special groups with the Integrated Programs Co-Director. Refer all learning groups to the Programs Co-Director for the processing of their requests and inquiries.
· Help implement site security and safety protocol with all on-site contractors, sub-contractors, researchers, and visitors as instructed by the Directors.
· Help develop an annual work plan with Hoʻōla Ka Makanaʻā management team, Kamehameha Schools (KS) Hui Mālama ʻĀina, and HFIA Executive Director.
· Assist in data collection, taking photographs and providing information for grant proposals and reports when directed.
· Assist Directors and Monitoring Technician to schedule and conduct various monitoring projects.
· Assist with the maintenance of all plant databases.
· Attend fire training sessions and/or related courses when available.
· Attend other meetings and conferences relating to the restoration of the forest.
· Report any unusual occurrences or conditions immediately to the Restoration Co-Director.
· Complete and turn in work timesheet every two weeks.
· Perform other duties as needed.
· Must complete a 3-month probation period at the start of employment.
· Continuation of employment is dependent upon satisfactory work performance and availability of funds.
Qualifications
· Four-year degree and two years’ work experience in natural resource management OR five years’ work experience in natural resource management or related field (restoration/farming in Hawai‘i/mahi‘ai) required.
· Must have an excellent work ethic, be able to work independently, and be a good team player.
· Must have good organizational and communication skills.
· Must have good computer skills with preferred competency in Word, Excel, Power Point, and GPS experience.
· Will be required to work outdoors on rough terrain and must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
· Must maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
